Anything Can Happen In The Cup, and it almost Did!

Tough fixture playing away against Wimbledon today in the first round of the league cup.

The Satellites produced an incredible display and battled to a 7-4 loss, against a team that had only conceded 6 goals in the season before today.

The Satellites attacked from the first minute and put the home side under some decent pressure during the first 5 minutes, with Maisie making some strong runs down the left and Amy T making some equally strong runs down the right, who had a decent shot at goal in the 5th minute, which went just wide.

Against the run of play, Wimbledon took an early lead, but the team from Churt bounced back straight away. A through ball from Hannah in the 10th minute was met by Ella, who produced a strong finish in the bottom left corner whilst under pressure from the home defence.

Being level didn’t last long however, and the home team took the lead again in the 12th minute, with a strong shot from outside the penalty area.

The Satellites continued to attack and won a corner on the 15 minute. Wimbledon managed to head the first corner out of danger for a corner. However, the second corner was whipped in superbly by Ella which was met by Hannah, who scored with a powerful header for an equalising goal; 2-2

Wimbledon started to dominate slightly towards the end of the first half, but the Satellites worked hard to try to prevent them taking the lead again. Lily, Liv and Phoebe all pressed hard in centre midfield to restrict their passing game.

However, Wimbledon took the lead again in the 25th minute. A strong challenge by Churt led to a free kick, which Wimbledon converted with an impressive shot. This was soon followed by another goal and Churt went in at half time 4-2 down. Hannah was unfortunate knock to score another goal, hitting the post in the 30th minute, where the ball then rebounded across the goal, before being retrieved by the goaly. The video replay may show if it crossed the line, but neither the referee nor linesman awarded the goal.

The Satellites switched from a 3-5-2 to a 4-4-2 at half time. They continued to tackle and press hard. The home attackers couldn’t match the pace of Tia or Isobel, nor could they match the strength of Tallula and Emily. The away team were unfortunate to concede a 5th goal in the 40th minute. Following a strong challenge there was an unfortunate deflection and the ball fell kindly to one the Wimbledon strikers, who converted her chance well. Wimbledon then scored 2 more goals over the next 10 minutes (one from a corner, and the other a powerful long range shot). However, the away team continued to play extremely well and refused to give up. In the 55th minute they were rewarded for their efforts with a 3rd goal. After some strong passing in midfield, Ruby played an accurate pass through to Hannah, who held off the defenders and scored a clinical goal on the half volley. The match continued to be end to end, and Tilly made a superb save on the 58th minute, tipping a looping ball over the cross bar to prevent Wimbledon scoring their 8th goal. The Satellites refused to give up hope of an unlikely comeback, and just continued to attack, with Phoebe hitting the cross bar following a corner during a goal mouth scramble in the 61st minute They were rewarded for their efforts in the 66th minute, when Ruby threaded another ball forward, this time met by Ella who tucked away her 2nd goal of the game.

Final score 7-4. This is the Satellites strongest performance to date, despite losing, and they have demonstrated they are strong enough to compete against the best teams in the Premier division.
