The teams came to the match in 2nd (Churt) and 3rd (Motspur) place, with Motspur trailing Churt by 2 points, with 2 games in hand.
Churt licking their wounds from last week's defeat, really needed a win here to stay in the race for the Title (Just about) and keep a grip on second place. They started the game with a formation tweak, playing 3 strong defenders, 4 in midfield and 1 up front.
The game started with a lot of strong tackles in the middle of the park, both teams keeping each other from many chances. If anything Churt were slightly on top and forcing some corners. On the 10th minute, after a couple of close ones, Ella Farrier swung in a corner which Tallula Musgrove got to first, but the ball hit the goalkeeper and came back out, this time Lily Jay pounced and put the ball in the net for Churt to take a 1-0 lead.
On the 15th minute Churt made a couple of changes, with Amy O'Donnell coming on for Lily Jay upfront, and Liv Potter coming into the centre of midfield to replace Amy Thompson.
In general the Churt defence were stopping anything that Motspur threw at them and Churt were almost breaking through a number of times. On the 19th minute Hannah Watts came off the pitch with a slight injury, so Amy Thompson replaced her for the rest of the half.
On the 27th minute, Churt had another strong corner, similar to how they'd already scored and Tallula Musgrove, once again, pounced but the ball hit the post and came back out for Motspur to chase up the other end. As usual, Isobel Kandak defended solidly and managed to stop the attack before it had started. Playing on the left side of a three woman defence, she was unbeaten for pace all through the game, whilst her partners, Emily Watts and Tallula also played well and also contributed to the attacking play, Tallula at corners and Emily running out of defence and passing the ball through. Tilly Carr in goal was having a confident match, catching and holding the ball well every time she needed to.
Churt finished the half the stronger team, but only being 1-0 up this was anyone's game.
In the second half, Hannah Watts came back on for Maisie Lambert, whilst Lily Jay went back up front with Amy O'Donnell coming back off.
After 36 minutes, Maisie came back on for Hannah as she was still feeling her injury.
The game continued to be close but there were not a lot of chances from either side as both sets of defences were winning their battles.
On the 40th minute, Mostpur had a corner, which was swept in high. Churt goalkeeper managed to get to it but only just managed to brush it away to a Motspur player, who tucked it into the goal, from a tight angle and for an equaliser. 1-1.
Hannah Watts came back on after 45 minutes for Ella Farrier and within a few minutes she was causing problems down the right hand side. The Motspur defender (who was probably the outstanding player on the pitch) made a strong challenge and brought Hannah down but the referee played on, as the game continued it was hit against a Motspur hand in the penalty area and a penalty awarded to Churt. Hannah Watts stepped up to put it away and Churt into a 2-1 lead.
On the 53rd minute another corner from Churt, this time Hannah Watts taking from the left, and once again, Tallula Musgrove was the first to the ball, with a neat flick into the net, pretty good for someone who says she's a defender and can't score (today she has a goal, an assist and hit the post).
Hannah again had to leave the field as her injury had re-occurred from the corner taking, but again, not a bad performance, a penalty and an assist before coming off to be replaced by the hungry Ella Farrier.
Straight away Ella was put through and nearly got to the ball, and with another chance she did a great turn from the right and just missed the goal.
Churt were definitely on top and now deserving their lead as the game ended 3-1. The team had put in a phenomenal performance against a very tough Motspur Park, two strong goals from corners and a great defensive and midfield performance too, a really good comeback from the defeat the week before.
Woman of the match for Churt was Lily Jay, who scored early and gave Churt confidence, and also who played really well for the team as a sole striker up front (interchanging the role with Amy O'Donnell). Woman of the match for Motspur had to be their number 7 , "Shay", who was simply first to every tackle and ball, every time Churt to an extra touch, really one of the best players we've seen all season.
But a good return to form from the whole of the Churt team, including a solid Midfield performance from Liv Potter, Amy Thompson and Maisie Lambert.
